Alka-Seltzer
Jorge Queiroz
In a dimly-lit space spread across a number of floors, echoes what sounds like an Alka-Seltzer. In the time it takes to dissolve chattering birds and the strange form of a gigantic octopus – kin to the squid whose home is the old Aquário Vasco da Gama aquarium – manifest themselves.
Here, among twists and shadowy turns and the kaleidoscopic images of a video on repeat, as we pass narrow corridors and noisy clearings, we recognise a head, tentacles, the idea of something substantial connecting it all.
Becoming sound and assuming visual form, weaving through the space towards a selection of drawings, an ectoplasmic creature merges setting and presence, works and exhibition, visitor and the thing being shown.
Diluting frontiers and overlaying experiences, Jorge Queiroz, with the help of David Maranha, roams freely between thought and intuition, between that which we recognise and that which catches us unawares, articulated through a personal imaginary of beings and their unexpected associations.
