«The texts assembled together here were thus generally written not for their own sake, but for a particular occasion or in response to a request. They address specific issues, which – retrospectively and in combination with each other – provide a sharply-focused view of Artschwager’s work, and just here and there, of his personality too.
However, when Artschwager commented on specifics, he always still had the wider issues in his sights, that is to say what an artist is doing when s/he works in painting and sculpture “based on the relation between the thing, its maker/consumer, and the common space they occupy”. These texts stand as shining examples of their kind for the lucidity with which Artschwager describes the precepts of his work, touches on philosophical questions and weighs these up against art praxis per se.»
